During an attack on Dshankoi (Crimea) railroad station, Schellong's He.111 H-20 (W.Nr. 700816) 5J+AL was shot down in flames. The aircraft crashed among the trains with its full bomb load. Schellong and his crew of Unteroffizier Erwin Kelloch (observer), Unteroffizier Gustav Howell (radio operator), Obergefreiter Fritz Linke (gunner) and Geschwader meterologist Regierungsrat Herbert Kuster, who had gone along as second gunner, were subsequently reported missing.

Oberleutnant Hans Schellong is is posthumously awarded the Ritterskreuz des Eisernes Kreuz (Knights Cross of the Iron Cross).
Present
Hans Scheelong and his crew remain among the many Wehrmacht soldiers whose remains are missing to this day.
