History
1940
Monte Rosa was the name of a passenger ship taken over and used as a Kaserne (barracks, billet) by one of the Luftwaffe's training units. IIRC, she was anchored in one of the Baltic ports, possibly Stettin . Because of the unusual "barracks", the men gave the battalion the unofficial name Monte Rosa. Monte Rosa was the name used for the Luftwaffe's Fluganwärterbataillon I from January 1940 to 1 October 1941. It was Stettin harbor and the battalion consisted of a Stab and 1.-5. Kpn. with a total of some 600 trainees. The training course was 11 weeks. As Fluganwärterbataillon I, it transferred from Stettin to the Brest - St.-Brieux - Dinan area in Brittany in June 1942, and then in December 1942 it became I./Flieger-Rgt. 90.
